A Declaration of Faith

If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. – Daniel 3:17 (NIV)

What’s interesting about this passage is not the verse itself but the verse immediately after it. Shadrach, Meschach and Abednego after declaring verse 17 say in verse 18, “But even if He does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” This speaks volumes about the honesty, humanity, pragmatism and solid faith these three possessed. In their shoes, I would have myself exclaimed the second statement (possibly instead of the first, being the “still growing” Christian that I am) and leave everything to God as I pray my final prayer, which would be along the lines of, “Lord, remember me in paradise…” I love the honesty and humility in these three men’s “declaration of faith” to King Nebuchadnezzar. Even in honest practicality, there can be faith that is not “reckless abandonment” but acquiescent assurance in a God that saves. By: Joshua Padla
